When Jessica was in the 4th grade I worked at Winn-Dixie in the produce department. She was in the gifted student program and studying Guiseppe Archimboldo - http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plan/vegetable-faces-guiseppe-archimboldo-portrait-study - an artist who used vegetables to create art and portraits. The produce department discarded pounds of bruised fruit and blemished veggies so so I brought a banana box full of produce to use. The kids had a blast using the produce with toothpicks to anchor things in place. They made cars and people and generally had lots of fun. It might be fun to take the girls through the produce department and let them select fruit and veggies for their own art project and then "eat” their creations for lunch or dinner :)
