Chosen Says YES to the Dress

Whoa!  What a whirlwind the last few days have been!  I have to share with you one of those once in a lifetime moments that I experienced today.

First of all, in my last post I talked about how precious friendships are and that sometimes I wish I could bring both of my worlds (longtime childhood friends and special friends made later in life) together.  Today would have been one of those times, but since I can't physically do that, I want to introduce you - via my blog - to a few of my closest friends.

This is quite a love story of a beautiful couple to which I am honored and blessed to call friends.  Since their story will more than likely be shared on national television for the whole world to see, I'm sure she won't mind if I tell a few of you.  ;)

Let me introduce you to Chrissy.  Chrissy is an extraordinary woman who is beautiful both inside and out.  She is a caring, dedicated mother to 3 wonderful kids, one of which is Audrey's BFF.  For 16 years Chrissy was a faithful, loving wife to quite the comedian and guitar player, Hank.  The last five years of their marriage Chrissy sacrificed everything to care for Hank as he battled cancer.  He lived an honorable life that ended as perfectly as it possibly could - surrounded by family and friends praying with him as he left this earth.  In his final days, he made sure that his family was taken care of and gave his blessing to Chrissy to move on when she was ready.  He did not want her to live the rest of her life alone.  They were merely 39 years old when Hank passed away.

I can tell you that Chrissy has been one of the strongest, most amazing examples of faith I have ever seen.  She has kept her family going every step of the way.  She sings weekly with Chosen, helping lead worship and giving God the Glory in all things.  Chrissy is stunning and full of grace.

Now, let's fast forward a couple of years.  Chrissy meets a man named Joe.  Their stories and similarities are a bit on the eery side.  Joe's wife battled cancer for five years, passing away at almost the same time as Hank.  She also left behind 3 children.

Long story short, Chrissy and Joe fell in love.  Her friends (known as the director and lead singer for Chosen) put him through the ringer to make sure he was fit for our queen.  He passed the test.  He asked Chrissy to marry him. She said yes.  Now the wedding planning begins.....

Not only do we, Chosen, sing together every week, but we are very best friends.  We love each other, help one another, and just enjoy hanging out.  What an honor it was when Chrissy asked us to go wedding dress shopping with her -- Ms. Shabby Chic Fashionista herself!  (Did she really have a
choice?!). We went last week to a local bridal shop and had a blast.  Unfortunately she did not find the perfect dress.  So, she applied on a whim to "Say Yes to the Dress - Atlanta" from TLC.  They contacted her the next day (Thursday), approved her Friday, and we taped today (Tuesday)!  Everything happened so fast!

The experience today was awesome!  We have been praying through the whole process that our testimonies would be upheld and that God would be glorified through it all.  We had a few opportunities to sing while we were there.  (Seriously, how cool would it be to sing on national television?!)  We openly spoke of our faith.  And, we had a great time helping Chrissy find the perfect dress!

I've never laughed so hard at times.  And, of course, we shed some serious tears at times.  It was an emotional day.  If drama and backstabbing is what they wanted, that is not what they got.  But, they did get a real life, heartfelt story of an amazing couple.  We had our share of silly moments, too.  Who knows how some of our craziness might be misconstrued for tv.  Of course, the hosts of the show really played on the whole church music gig with "Can I  get an 'Amen' from the choir?" and "Can the choir say 'Hallelujah'?" My prayer is that our words come across as genuine as they were in our hearts.

Will they choose Chrissy and her Chosen posse to air on Season 7?  That, nobody knows for sure, but I will tell you that I have truly seen the hand of God working through this whole experience. Whether we are televised or not, we made some serious memories today!  And, I pray that we touched some lives in the process.
Mic'd up and ready to go!

Checking In - August

Checking in!  The past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind.  That and my computer's battery charger DIED.  I was without my computer 3 days.  I thought I was going to have a break down.  LOL  Seriously... how does anybody function without technology these days?  I felt so disconnected.

Anyhoo... here's the 411 on our happenings.  First of all, I had a fantastic trip with Chosen to Mississippi.  It was truly awesome!  I tell ya, if you do not have a relationship with Jesus, you are missing out!  There was some praising going on.  We spent a lot of time on the road and I enjoyed every  minute of it.  I know I may annoy you sometimes saying things over and over, but really - I'm so grateful for this group of ladies.  They are the best friends a gal could ask for.  They're fun to be with.  And, I'm just so blessed to sing with them.  It's fun "going on the road" with them.  =) I will never forget these times.

We're now finishing up our second week of homeschool for 2nd grade.  Audrey is doing really well.  We haven't had a lot of blow ups (yet).  She is catching on very quickly and getting work done (shew!). This child is so smart.  Really.  I know children are like sponges, but her level of comprehension sometimes amazes me.  What a joy it is to be able to share in her education and see all the "ah ha" moments.  Today before we started school, we had breakfast together and then walked a couple of miles on the Greenway.  I love spending one on one time with her and just talking to her.  She really is a great kid!

Maddie started Pre-K yesterday.  No, we do not homeschool Maddie - yet.  We do send her to a private Christian preschool 4 mornings a week because we feel that is the best thing for her right now (she goes from 9-1:00).  We will, more than likely, start her at home for kindergarten next year.  She is enjoying it - though is a little sad that none of her friends from last year are in her class.  :(  But, she said she did get to see some of them on the playground and that helps.  She feels like such a big girl because she's now in the "carpool" lane.  =)

My sweet girl on her first day of PreK!

Cheerleading is going very well.  It is the hardest thing I've ever done, but one of the most rewarding.  I love those little girls!  They are so darn cute.  And, what is being asked of them is huge.  The expectations are very high.  But, I have no doubt they'll come through.  I'm so honored to be part of such a high quality program.  It can be quite intimidating, but God would not have put me in this position if He didn't think we could do it!  On a sidenote, I'm incredibly thankful for the other moms He has put in place to help guide these girls.  They are amazing!  They are so knowledgeable and fantastic with the girls.  They're also becoming great friends of mine.  A gal can't have too many friends!

The girls at the end of a very hard choreography week with our fantastic choreographer from Florida.
I went to the doctor this week for a check up.  I accidentally let my prescription run out - which was not cool!  I'm almost back on track now.  (Note to self: Do NOT let that happen again!)  The doctor wants me to do another fasting blood work next month.  My sugar was too high and good cholesterol too low (which I knew).  Apparently my blood pressure was high yesterday, too.  She says I have to have a Sleep Study done.  I'm pretty sure the Apnea is back.  She looked in my throat and said that something (don't remember the term) was too big and the air wasn't getting through properly which is probably why I'm not sleeping well and snoring.  Blah!  Can I just whine and tell you how much I do NOT want to do a sleep study or have to wear a CPAP?!  :(  I know... lose the weight, stop complaining.  Anyway, I also had my foot checked out.  It has bothered me for months (actually since I trained for the 3-Day a couple of years ago).  Every time I walk for extended amounts of time or start working out, my foot bothers me for days.  She's afraid I have some torn tendons.  :(  It is possible there's an old stress fracture so she took an x-ray - but I haven't received results yet.  She gave me an inflammatory, told me to ice twice a day, and giving me physical therapy.  She wants to try this first because she's pretty sure if she sends me to the Orthopedist, they'll put me straight in a boot.  I do not have time for that!  LOL

All of the other activities start back next week.  I'll be teaching 2nd Grade choir again at church.  Both of my girls will be in choir, as well as a Awana.  We also start back our weekly Chosen rehearsals.  The following week we'll start our weekly Bible Studies back up.  It's a busy time of year!

So, that's our update.  I'll keep checking in!  Thanks for sticking around.

The Season of Singing Has Come....

"I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding." 1 Cor. 14:15
"Sing to Him, sing praise to Him; tell of all His wonderful acts." 1 Chr. 16:9
"I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing the praises of Your name, O Most High." Psalm 9:2
"Sing to Him a new song..." Psalm 9:2
"Because You are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings." Psalm 63:7
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens." Ecc 3:1
"...the season of singing has come..." Song of Sol 2:12
"...sing and make music from your heart to the Lord." Eph 5:19

When I got to singing rehearsal with my new sweet friends Wednesday morning, these were the verses that were written down and handed to me by our fearless leader.  Perfect reference to the events that unfolded in the next few minutes.  Today was the first day back for the lady on maternity leave that I have been filling in for.  I knew my time was almost up, but they had asked me to stick around a little longer because another member would be going on a mission trip in April, so it just made sense to all sing together until the end of her trip.  So, back to the verses I began with.  The leader handed me the card with these verses on them and asked me to read them aloud to the rest of the group.  There's this part of my brain saying, "Oh, it's time to say goodbye and they got me this sweet card."  (Because, seriously people, these are the most precious, genuinely thoughtful ladies E.V.E.R!)  However, at the bottom of the page there was an arrow pointing to the other side.  I flipped it over and began to read aloud - until the tears started and I couldn't talk any more.  My heart rejoiced, my brain did a 180 (yes, in my head), and I felt like a giddy little girl as I read about half way down the page to these words... "We would be honored if you would join us as a member of WOW - officially - and sing His praises with us as a permanent member!"

Are you kidding me?!  I am just beside myself with excitement!  What an absolute honor and privilege to be part of this amazing group, who by the way, have been singing together for 7 years!  I know God knows the desires of our hearts, so I should not be so amazed when He provides such blessings, but I am!  God is so good!  He knew what I had need of.  He knew my heartfelt desire.  And, He paved a path for me - putting these lovely people in my life for a reason.  "I will rejoice and be glad in it!"

Now, the reality side of me, in all seriousness, is scared.  Not just because of the great commitment I just made.  But, I know how Satan loves to try to crush things that are pleasing to God.  And, I remember a time when I was part of such a group that was singing His praises before - and Satan attacked each of our families in a mighty way.  But, I know that my God is bigger!  We are going to have a good time singing and praising.  I in no way feel worthy of this position, but I am incredibly grateful beyond any words that I can type in this space!  =)  Thank you, Jesus, for your grace & mercy!

In/Out of the Spotlight

There are those that love the spotlight and others that don't.  I find that every day with my girls.  I have one that would rather sit back and take it all in - never wanting to be seen.  While the other jumps in head first to see what kind of laughs she can get.

So, I've been thinking about my own light.  I'd say for the most part, I've been a spot light kinda girl.  I like performing - rather it be dance, colorguard, singing, etc.  I use to really like to be the life of the party.  But, not so much any more.  I'd rather sit back and watch - have an intimate conversation and not be the center of attention.   I've played many leadership roles in my 30-something years, but I'm learning it's nice to sit on the sidelines and watch every once in a while.  Not to say that I don't still have opportunities that come my way to take the lead.  However, I'm seeing that with life there are many seasons.  There's a time to learn and a time to teach.  I think the process is on going.  And, I'm in a new season.

God has humbled me many times.  He sometimes has to speak loudly and frequently - I'm a little hard of hearing.  He has also shown me that I am still capable of learning and that He will use me where HE sees fit, not necessarily where I want to be.

Now, let me preface these next thoughts by saying that I in no way want to seek credit in any talent I may *think* I possess.  ;)  God gives and God takes away.  God uses our talents for His glory and when we abuse that, I think He can and will put them back where they came from, so to speak.  But, I also know that God wants to give us the desires of our own hearts.  With all that being said, I want to share with you some exciting stuff!  =)  And, I want to thank God for the opportunity, no matter how short or long the time I am given on this project is.

Several years ago I was part of a women's quartet at my church in TN.  I honestly don't remember how we formed our group because we didn't know each other that well.  We were all in choir together, knew each of us had some knowledge of music & voice, and had a desire to sing more.  Never did I think such a bond would be formed.  Aside from all the music we made, I know for me, we created lasting friendships that I will never, ever forget.  God worked through us, if for no one else, for the 4 of us.  Yes, we sang several concerts, sang at different churches, and gathered once a week to rehearse the music.  But, had it not been for those 3 ladies, I would have really struggled through some difficult times.  They ended up being the ones I turned to when I didn't know where else to go.  We all went through very similar situations at different times and were able to help each when it was our time to go through the valley.  I, to this day, love those 3 women!  We sang together for roughly 3 years, but eventually we all went separate ways because of life changes (and moves).  I miss them so much!  I have not felt another bond like that since.

Now fast forward to my new life in GA.  We started out at a very small church (similar to all the churches I grew up in) that we loved for two years.  But, with lack of child care, there were very few opportunities for us to attend classes or Bible studies.  I called a local church that I passed every day taking Audrey to PreK.  I saw they had a Women's Bible Study, so I was curious if child care was provided.  To my surprise, it was and I jumped on board immediately.  The first time I went to the study, a sweet older lady asked me to join her.  She has grown to be such a cherished friend.  Anyway, they opened up the study with praise and worship.  Five ladies got on stage and sang the most beautiful harmonies I had ever heard.  And, you could just tell they were truly singing for the Lord.  I got a little teary eyed watching and listening to them that first day.  I had to call each of "my girls" to tell them how much they reminded me of our quartet days and how much I missed them.

I continued going back week after week and was blessed each and every time I heard them sing.  It really made me miss the old singing days with the girls.  I'd be lying if I didn't say there was a longing within me to be up there with them!  Within a few months, God very clearly showed us it was time to move to a new church.  He had already been paving the way to First Redeemer starting with that first day at the Beth Moore Bible Study.  We have been at our new church for a year now.  God has opened up so many doors for us there.  The girls have learned so much and look forward to going every day.

I personally have never been a member of such a large church.  I was afraid I'd get lost in the crowd.  But, I have been pleasantly surprised at how wrong I was.  And, back to that humbling thing I talked about earlier in the post.  ;)  Being part of small churches, I was given many opportunities to sing solos and be a big part of the music ministry.  I think I took a lot of those things for granted.  God has placed me in an amazing music program where the talent is truly unbelievable!  He has shown me just how small I am, while placing me exactly where I need to be and allowing me to grow in spirit.  But, He is also loving and gracious.

A couple of months after joining the church & choir, I auditioned for the Praise Team.  (First time I've ever had to audition for a church thing.  That was a lesson in and of itself!)  Shew.  I made it.  I was a little intimidated at first, but have really learned a lot singing with such great talent!  The end of last year I was honored to be asked to audition for a part in the Christmas program - a small ensemble for one song.  It worked out and the program went great!  In that process, I got to work with a wonderful lady who is also the leader of the women's quintet from our Bible Study that I so adore.  After our first rehearsal, she gave me the sweetest compliment ever --- she asked me to fill in for one of her girls in the group!!  After I picked my jaw off the floor, I graciously accepted.  One of their members was having a baby and they had been praying and looking for someone to temporarily take her place.  After hearing my voice, she thought that I would blend great with them.  I started singing with them this month and it has been the BEST time!  Music aside, these ladies are amazing!  They are the most precious, loving, Christian ladies ever.  The time we spend "rehearsing" is filled with stories, laughter, music, and worship.  It's been wonderful!  Sunday was my first time singing with them for the worship service (we do the Bible Study service on Thursdays) and it was incredible.

God has shown me, I don't have to be the "it" girl.  I don't have to have all the solos or be in the spotlight.  The gift He has given me is a blending voice.  And, as long as I keep the focus on Him and less of me & the music, He will use me.  I am so guilty of wanting more and more, but I don't need it.  God certainly knew the desires of my heart and mercifully obliged!  I'm not sure how long I will have with the ladies, but I'm cherishing every moment. To be completely honest, I wish it wasn't temporary (that more and more attitude again), but I know God has a plan for me when it's all said and done.  He's still teaching me.  I'm seeking His will and that is the focus.  I'm just grateful for what He has allowed me to do and anxious to see what He will have me do in the future.
